COOK, Eliza (1818-1889). Autograph manuscript signed ('Eliza Cook') of her poem 'A Wise Man's Carol', one page, folio (light soiling, split at fold to lower right margin with tape repair to verso causing discolouration), backed onto card, mounted with a portrait engraving.
'Wisdom's helmet strapped too tight Wearies in the wearing And Folly's bells on Christmas night Are always pleasant hearing'. Cook's poems were characterised by attractive sentiments expressed through simple forms and themes, and, leavened with her strongly democratic beliefs and resentment of the constraints placed upon women by society, they brought her considerable popular success in the mid-19th Century.
