Lot Essay

In 1944, Dalí was commissioned by the Broadway producer and American theatrical showman Billy Rose to paint seven decorative panels for the Ziegfeld theater that would depict the seven lively arts. After a fire in his Westchester home destroyed all of the paintings, Rose asked Dalí to paint replacements, of which the present work is one.
