The Imperial steam yacht Livadia, a ship of famed design and opulence, was built in 1880 in Govan for Tsar Alexander II. Its experimental design in the shape of a turbot, following the plans of Admiral Popov, attracted a number of visits from leading shipbuilders during its construction. Its lavish interiors were designed by William Leiper (1839-1916) one of Glasgow's leading architects. The firm of Bedford Lemere, architectural photographers to Queen Victoria, recorded the grandeur of this marine palace. The launch attracted a crowd of 40,000 to the banks of the Clyde. Admiral Popov, along with Grand Duke Alexis and other notable Russian contemporaries, took the ship on its maiden voyage to Sevastopol. Tsar Alexander was assasinated just ahead of sailing his ship for the first time. RARE. ABPC records no copy selling at auction for more than 30 years.
