Oblong 2° (230 x 260mm). Engraved title with a hand-coloured vignette, letterpress music scores. (Light browning, scattered spotting.) Contemporary marbled boards, gilt title label on front cover (rubbed, corner lightly bumped).

VERY RARE COMPILATION OF TRADITIONAL RUSSIAN SONGS, issued by the celebrated publisher of Beethoven. 'Laid at the feet' of the empress Elisabeth Alexeevna, this collection was established from Russian manuscripts and includes 12 pages of notes on the 24 songs translated. The picturesque title vignette, engraved by Christian G. H. Geissler, shows singing and dancing Russian peasants in traditional costumes. Apparently no copy sold at auction in the past century; we could locate only one copy in public institutions (SLUB, Dresden). RISM D 3420.
