ST. PETERSBURG, Panorama -- SADOVNIKOV, Vasilii Semenovich (1800-1879). Panorama of Nevskii Propect. [St. Petersburg: A. Prévost, 1830].
14 lithographs (c.550 x c.200mm), by I. Ivanov after Sadovnikov, individually matted (a few small and mostly marginal expert repairs). Custom-made blue cloth box, morocco label gilt on front cover.
FIRST EDITION OF THIS RARE PANORAMA, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PUBLICATIONS ISSUED BY PRéVOST (1801-1867), the indefatigable promoter of Russian art. 'The numerous details taken from the life of the city during the first half of the 19th-century make the Panorama A MOST VALUABLE DOCUMENT OF THE AGE. Furthermore [it] is both an original document of Russian townscape painting during its golden age, and a fine example of the lithographic art of the thirties of the 19th-century' (Kotelnikova). St. Petersburg's most famous thoroughfare and its majestic buildings have come to embody the city itself. Some of the buildings shown include: the Anichkov Palace (now altered), the Public Library, Vorontsov's Palace (now the Suvorov Military Academy), the adjacent 18th-century church (now no longer extant), Gostinii Dvor, 'Silver Row' (now altered), Count Stroganov's Palace, the Admiralty, and the Rotunda, also known as Mme La Tour's Panorama, one of the first of its type. A second part was issued 5 years later, depicting the Northern side of the avenue. Kotelnikova, Introduction to the facsimile, Leningrad: Aurora, 1974; Salmina-Haskell, Panoramic Views of St. Petersburg from 1776-1835, 32.
