IRELAND - LAFRERI SCHOOL.
Hybernia Nvnc Irlant. Rome or Venice: [c. 1570]. Engraved map of Ireland, 340 x 251mm (Some discolouration and creasing to left side of map.)

A rare and fine map of Ireland. Clearly made by a member of the Lafreri School, but the precise details of its production remain a mystery. The geographically progressive form of the island and the finely engraved detail of the landscape clearly derive form Bolognino Zaltieri's 1565 map of Ireland, engraved by Paolo Forlani. A very similar map of the same title was produced in Rome c.1570-85 by Cladio Duchetti, the principal inheritor of Antonio Lafreri's business and plates. This would suggest that Duchetti's Rome workshop was a likely origin for this edition. Tooley:1939 no.318, watermark of man with a pickaxe and water jug, not in Woodward:1996.
