Lot Essay

The present composition is a version with minor differences, of the signed picture (213 x 151.5 cm.) in the Musée Saint-Denis, Reims, inv. no. 795-1-77 (exhibited Paris, Grand Palais, Le Siècle de Rubens dans les collections publiques françaises, 1977-78, pp. 127-8, no. 90).

Dr. Hans Vlieghe has attributed another version of the present work to the Master of Pieter van Mol, Artus Wolffort (see H. Vlieghe, 'Zwischen van Veen und Rubens: Artus Wolffort (1581-1641), ein vergessener Antwerpener Maler', Wallraf-Richartz-jb., XXXIX, 1977, p. 111, no. 32 (location unknown).
