Château Cos d'Estournel--Vintage 1996
Saint-Estèphe, 2me cru classé
Tasting Note: A high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon, long maturation. An acidic vintage. Still very tannic and raw though with good fruit at a British Airways tasting in June 1997. Leaping into prominence at the 'Top Ten' tasting at the New York Wine Experience, October 2000. Similar in colour to the '96 Barossa Estate from South Australia alongside; a very good, broad, fragrant nose which opened up richly in the glass. A dry wine, full of Cabernet fruit. 'Needs time'. The following month, the nose similarly well developed. Nice flavour, style, weight, tannic texture. Still deep and plummy; sweet, sweaty, tannic nose; rich and rusitc, rather surprisingly. Interesting mouthful. Last noted fleetingly, October 2001. **** M.B.
