Booklet-shaped, both front and rear hinged and inset with a gold-mounted bevelled square bloodstone panel, the front centred with a circular glazed reserve containing a plait of fair hair framed by a chased gold serpent swallowing its tail, the gold spine stamped with crosses, hinged gold clasp, bottle green moiré silk lining inside cover with gold-cut printed almanac for 1857 containing dates of eclipses, religious festivals, times of sunrises and sunsets, birth and death dates of British kings and queens, names of members of the cabinet, a table of stamps and transfer days at the bank; in original white silk-lined red morocco case
