MARK OF THOMAS GILPIN, LONDON, 1752
Vase-shaped, part spirally-fluted, on slightly bombé circular foot, with two curved and banded handles, the cover with gadrooned border and fluted acorn-shaped finial, the body engraved with a coat-of-arms, the foot engraved with the Royal Arms within Garter motto and Royal Crown above, fully marked on base and cover

The Royal Arms are for King George II (1727-1760).
The arms on the body are those of Villiers with a crescent for difference impaling Capel, for the Honourable Thomas Villiers (1709-1786), second son of William, 2nd Earl of Jersey (d.1721), and his wife Charlotte (d.1790), daughter of William, 3rd Earl of Essex (d.1743) and his wife Lady Jane Hyde, eldest surviving daughter of Henry, 4th and last Earl of Clarendon of the first creation.

Provenance
The Honourable Thomas Villers (1709-1786), later 1st Earl of Clarendon of the second creation, possibly a wedding gift from King George II, and then by descent.
