Lot Essay

This and the following lot are from a group of drawings on blue paper that were traditionally identified as Claude. In 1965 Marcel Roethlisberger successfully demonstrated that they were all by another unknown hand, from the colour notes probably a Frenchman working in Rome in about 1650.
