This gouache makes reference to the legend of the Merovingian king, Clovis II's, children, punished for having attempted, in the absence of their father, to conspire against him. Their punishmement subjected them to exasperation purgatory that consisted in boiling the convicts' legs. They were then settled on a raft, entrusted to salvation. They drifted until they reached the Jumièges abbey that gave them shelter. This epic tale has been revived by many writers, as in 1564 by Pierre Ronsard in "la Franciade" chant IV

Cette gouache fait référence à la légende des enfants du roi Mérovingien Clovis II châtiés pour avoir tenté en l'absence de leur père de comploter contre lui. Pour les punir, ils subissent le supplice de l'énervation qui consistait à bouillir les jambes des condamnés. Puis ils sont installés sur un radeau, les confiant à la providence. Ils dérivent jusqu'à l'abbaye de Jumièges qui les recueille. Cette épopée a été reprise par de nombreux écrivains, tel en 1564 par Pierre de Ronsard dans le chant IV de la Franciade.
