MAYAN POLYCHROME VESSEL
LATE CLASSIC, ca. A.D. 550 - 950
painted on each side with an audience scene, one depicting a crosslegged scribe holding a brush, a blackened shell before him with God N, possibly Hun Ahau, emerging from the opening, an allusion to a painter's pot filled with pigment, the other side with a crosslegged lord seated on a dais covered with jaguar skin, before him a seated attendant wearing a bird's mask, 'the Ahau Vulture,' holding a bouquet of feathers toward the dignitary, a personification once more of Hun Ahau, a band of Primary Standard Sequence glyphs above, in dark orange and black against the pale orange ground.
Height 7 in. (17.8 cm.)

Further details
The scene depicted here of God N and Hun Ahau may be another version of the defeat of the Lords of the Underworld.
