On the upper register the dominating image of the Hodegetria Mother of God flanked by the relics of Sts. Gerasimos and Spyridon, below the emperor St. Constantine and his mother Elena supporting the True Cross, at their left St. George the new martyr, holding the martyr's attributes: the cross and the palm branch, painted with bright colours with white highlights, against yellow and deep green background

Lot Essay

The relics of Sts. Gerasimos and Spyridon are preserved in Kephalonia and Corfu respectively. The saints are also the patrons of the two islands. St. George the New Martyr is the patron saint of Ioannina. These details clearly locate the icon to the areas where the represented saints were most venerated.
