Lot Essay

Boldini frequently painted small-scale works of ladies playing the piano, in either contemporary domestic or imagined 18th-century interiors. The present work most likely depicts one of the players at the Folies-Bergère in Paris, and is part of a significant body of the artist's work depicting French café society and night life.
