Lot Essay

Pierre Jules Mêne is probably the best known of the French Animalier School. He exhibited in the Salon from 1838 onwards and won several medals.
This dog group, with Sylphie the setter and Tac the pointer, is one on Mêne's best known pieces and was made in several large editions. Exhibited in wax at the 1848 Salon and again in bronze two years later, it is listed no. 25 in his catalogue.
