Lot Essay

The present work is part of a series of paintings by Herring called The Mothers, all engraved in 1854-1855. Among other animals, the series included 'Hack Mare and Foal', 'Cart Mare and Foal', 'Thoroughbred Mare and Foal', 'Draught Mare and Foal' and 'Hunting Mare and Foal'.
