Lot Essay

Views of Singapore by Seago occur very rarely at auction. The last to appear was Quayside Houses, Singapore, Sotheby's, London, 28 September 1994, lot 201 (£28,175).

Although Seago visted Singapore in 1956/7 en route to Antartica with the Duke of Edinburgh, it is thought that this picture probably dates from his tour of Hong Kong, Burma and Bangkok in 1962. It is of particular interest as it shows South Bay Quay, an area that has now been radically redeveloped.

The picture was acquired by a keen admirer of the artist's work who met him when he was visiting Canada. A friendship by correspondence was maintained, and the artist was regularly visited on trips to England.
