This lot has been painted in a period when Kees Maks regularly turned to large scale pictures. In the years 1908-1916, Maks became well known for his large garden-scenes; Elegant people gathering round a table in sun-lit gardens. The present lot is probably his first large scale picture where a group of people is depicted inside a room. Maks tried to use the special effect of artificial light. In 't Atelier is a scene in the artist's studio on the Prinseneiland in Amsterdam. A rather provoking element in his pictures in this period are women smoking cigarettes, "Bij St. Lucas had hij (Maks) in 1911 nog 'In 't Atelier' laten zien, een zelfs voor zijn doen groot schilderij, 240 x 250 cm, een naakte vrouw schrijlings op een stoel, omringd door andere geklede figuren rond een tafel. Een dergelijk schilderij voor ons land ongekend ..." (op. cit. Venema, p. 28)
