An oval service dish from the Würtemberg Service
by the Imperial Porcelain Factory, St. Petersburg, period of Alexander I
Oval, the centre painted with an Italian view within gilt frame, the border with gilt band and laurel and coloured floral bands, four yellow ground cartouches at intervals with grisaille architectular landscapes on brown ground, gilt borders and rims, the reverse inscribed with the view, marked under base
18 in. (45.8 cm.) long
The inscription reads: Vue de la Place publique de Carini, Bourg situé à 18 mille de Palerme.

Lot Essay

With label on the reverse: Specimen of St. Petersburg porcelain, Painted from Views of Italy in Medallions, Presented by the Emperor Alexander I to Queen Catherine of Württemberg.

The service was a gift from Emperor Alexander I to his sister, daughter of Paul I, Grand Duchess Catherine (1788-1819) who married Wilhelm I, King of Württemberg in 1816. See note the previous lot.
