MARK OF NIKOLS AND PLINKE WITH THE IMPERIAL WARRANT AND WITH THE WORKMASTER'S MARK PK, ST. PETERSBURG, CIRCA 1874
Each piece engraved with a Cyrillic name below the Imperial crown, the rims of the larger pieces with Russian inscriptions, each with strapwork borders, the coffee pot, teapot, sugar bowl, cream jug and funnel with twisted handles, ivory insulators and samovar handles, comprising:
Samovar, on three birds feet and legs, with funnel and metal heating tube
A coffee pot
A teapot
A covered sugar bowl
A cream jug
An oval bowl with swing handle
A tea caddy
A circular bowl
A two tined fork
Twenty-four teaspoons
A pair of sugar tongs
A sifting spoon

All except the Samovar, contained in an original fitted case, fully marked
The Samovar 18½ in. (47 cm.) high excluding funnel
The teapot 7¾ in. (19.7 cm.) high
495 oz. (9,465 gr.) gross
The Cyrillic name translates as Maria or Marie. The inscription on the coffee pot translates as 'The Hostess Does Not Like not to Drink Coffee', the other pieces with further appropriate adages. (35)

Lot Essay

Grand Duchess Maria (or Marie) Alexandrovna (1853-1920) was the daughter of Alexander II and Marie of Hesse and sister of Alexander III. In 1874 the Grand Duchess married Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900), the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
