A Soviet porcelain plate
by the Imperial Porcelain Factory, period of Nicholas II, masked mark, with later blue overglaze State Porcelain Factory mark of hammer, sickle and cog, and artist's mark of Elizaveta Nikodimovna Potapova, indistinctly inscribed in black in Russian Rubensetein. Auth[or] Chekhonin 'The wreath of Flowers and fruit'.
Shaped circular, painted around the blank centre with flowers and fruit, after a design by Sergei Chekhonin of 1918, within black and red bands, the border with a black band with pink, ochre and green half leaf trellis, rust red rim, marked under base
10½ in. (26.8 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

Elizaveta Nikodimovna Potapova (1887-1966) studied architecture and drawing before joining the State Porcelain Factory in 1919, where she produced plates including Red Butterflies, Bird and Stylised Flowers for the 1919 exhibition. Potapova also reproduced compositions by Shchekotikhina-Pototskaya and Suetin.
