PROPERTY OF A LADY
According to family history, this brooch was originally given by Archduke Charles of Austria (1771-1847) to his daughter, Archduchess Thérèse (1816-1867). The Archduke, a Field Marshal of the Austrian Army, distinguished himself by defeating Napoleon's army at Aspern (outside Vienna), in 1809. Archduchess Thérèse married King Ferdinand II of both the Sicilies in 1837. By bequest, this present brooch was left to her daughter Maria Pia, Princess of Bourbon-Sicily (1849-1882), whose initials are applied on the case.
