According to Greek mythology, Eros met Psyche when he was ordered by his mother, the Goddess Aphrodite, jealous of Psyche's beauty, to feed her potions so as to make her fall in love with the ugliest man that she first laid eyes on. In doing this, he immediately fell in love with Psyche when he accidentally pricked himself with one of his arrows. Due to Aphrodite's enraging jealousy, Psyche was forbidden from being with Eros, and it was only when Eros flew to Olympus to beg for Zeus' mercy that they were both reunited.
The double entendre of Psyche referring to both the soul and a butterfly in Greek, brings together an interesting representation of the soul's immortality being so beautiful and vibrant as when a butterfly spreads its wings for the first time and when Psyche is rescued by Eros from the harmful consequences of Aphrodite's jealousy
Cf. Thomas Bulfinch, Bulfinch's Mythology: The Age of Fable, Modern Library, 2004, Ch. 11
