Montresor won the Caldecott for his illustrations to Beatrice Schenk de Regniers's May I Bring a Friend? (New York, 1964). This drawing was inscribed to Virginie Fowler, Montresor's editor at the time of May I Bring a Friend?'s publication, and was a gift to her upon winning the Caldecott medal.
