A Dutch small gilt-metal striking table clock with alarm
Gulis Van Gheelle, Amsterdam or Flanders. Dated 1591
The engraved circular case with bell housed in the base raised on bun feet, its gallery pierced with double circlets and its base pierced with interlaced circlets, the dial with engraved Roman chapters and raised touch pieces, the revolving centre disc also with Roman chapter ring, engraved with a design of conjoined eagle-headed scrolls and with four circular holes for setting, single iron hand, the circular movement plates joined by five rectangular section tapering pillars, its top plate bordered with an engraved band of foliate scrolls and flowers on a hatched ground, signed on a banner Gulis Van Gheelle 1591, with further engraving in the balance wheel position, the movement with barrel and fusee for the going train and open spring barrels for the strike and alarm, verge escapement with later hairspring balance, later countwheel and regulation disc, probably original balance cock

Lot Essay

Gheel (Gheelle), Gielis (Ghylis) van. He is recorded working circa 1589 in Amsterdam. Probably he was originally from the town of Geel.
