A RARE FRENCH GILT-BRASS POWDER-FLASK
Late 16th Century
With curved body of eliptical section formed in two parts fitted with flattened moulded base and top, the body embossed with a pair of marine monsters and a pair of medieval horsemen in combat within engraved strapwork ovals on respective sides, embossed with a series of masks and arrangements of fruit throughout, and all on a contrasting stippled ground, engraved with bands of acanthus enclosing the top and about the nozzle, the top engraved with a sportsman with matchlock musket and fitted with spring cut-off, the base engraved with a vacant cartouche, and with a pair of rings for suspension.
