A PAIR OF COMPOSITE ITALIAN HOLSTER PISTOLS WITH EARLIER GILT-BRASS MOUNTS IN THE PARISIAN TASTE
Partly mid-18th Century
With shortened four-stage barrels engraved with a band of leaves over the breech and struck with so-called Medici mark, gilt-brass locks cut with scrollwork within punched matted shaped panels, inscribed 'G. Landi' below the cocks and struck with maker's mark inside, 'BS', a mullet below and starburst above, later figured walnut full stocks (mid-19th Century) profusely decorated with panels of neo-baroque scrolls, leaves and flowers finely carved in relief on a contrasting stippled ground, each involving a demon mask and an elaborate cartouche on the butt, brass mounts cast in low relief, decorated after the published designs of Claude Simonin, including spurred pommels each with demon mask cap and finely engraved with figural vignettes from mythology, pierced escutcheons, and iron-capped ramrods.
