A RARE FRENCH WHEEL-LOCK HOLSTER PISTOL
circa 1620-30
With slender polygonal barrel formed with an octagonal breech with turned girdle between, strongly bevelled lock drawn-back to a moulded small finial, lightly engraved on both the tail, the pan and on the arm of the dog, the wheel etched and gilt with a dotted linear band and retained by a small bracket pierced and engraved with foliage, and fitted with moulded sliding pan-cover, fruitwood full stock (the butt repaired in several places), overlaid with a shaped iron plaque enclosing the barrel tang, 'fishtail' pommel with iron cap, small side-plate lightly engraved with scrolls, plain iron ramrod-pipe and fore-end cap, and iron-tipped wooden ramrod.
