I Nyoman Masriadi's bloated figures are an integral part of his artistic idioms that are rich in meaning and expressions which he uses to address sociological issues including 'Tradition versus Modernity' and progress in a developing country like Indonesia. These figures have become his narrative tool and trademark of Masriadi's style.
A prolific young Indonesians artist, Masriadi has come into in his won with the creation of a unique visual vocabulary using caricature-like figures, which he uses to communicate his message accessibly and effectively to his audience. The present work (diptych) depicts a man and a woman, one of them is eating ice cream and the other is drinking from a can. Both were painted in swim suits and with well toned skin colour that perhaps suggest a life style of leisure and play and inevitable gives both sitters a sense of joie de vivre.
The work definitely, is suggestive of all sorts of narratives but the artist doesn't really tell you what is going on at all. The effect is clear. Someone could feel that something has happened, in the sense of an after-event, or alternatively that something is going to happen but one is never sure, thence the artist makes the people feel that one is close to the subject as one feels that the painting (or the subjects) are addressing them directly, giving them a false sense of intimacy which is inviting them for a conversation.
The scale of the work results in a vast amount of flesh being displayed that inevitably adds a dimension of eroticism or sensuality to it. The feminine curvaceous is countered with the masculine torso creating a sense of overt sexuality that appeals more to one's intellect rather to one's sensory. Such is the ingenuous intention of Masriadi who ventures to be a storyteller with his artistic vocabulary.
