Lot Essay
The figures of Putu Sutawijaya are always floating with graceful fluidity of movement with this lightness in flight taking the viewer away on a soothing, lyrical journey. This has much to do with the artist's desire to momentarily elevate the viewer's sensibilities onto a more tranquil and serene plane, away from the harsher realities of disorder and complexities in life, adding some colour to life. The work takes on a meditative pause to allow the self to contemplate on more uplifting sentiments. The figures are drawn with strong lines with no particular focus on gender or race, but rather extending this generality more to emphasise the individual's personal growth.
Nothing is more telling than the title of the present lot Hiduplah Oleh Cahayamn (Live from your light), which reveals the artist's intention of creating a sense of transcendental peace and enlightenment. The movement in the work is reminiscent of the artist's own experience with traditional Balinese dance in his younger years. The dance which he protested against whilst learning it as a child has become a way to accentuate his Balinese cultural identity over the recent years. Depicting the figures dancing vigorously under the moonlight, the artist inevitably evokes a sense of ritualism and primitivism with the dance thus adding a potent and symbolic value to the work.
