In a letter addressed to the original owners of the work, Amorsolo described the present work which he titled as In the year 1900: A Sunday in Baras' Church, Rizal Province, Philippines, after 8 a.m. mass, "In front of the church there is a stand of bibinka fruits, and flowers. Three men discussing on behalf of the gallera. On the right side of the church (one sees) fishermen bancas in a portion of the Laguna Bay. On the left side, at the back of the church, far away, you see rice planters harvesting. You may also see the famous fire tree, known as caballero (gentleman) at full blossom on the month of May. And at the left side of the church, (one sees) the typical mango tree, known by all for its so exquisite fruit." The letter is originally in Spanish and the translation in English is provided by the owner of the present work.
