A GEORGE II IRISH SILVER COFFEE POT,
MARK OF WILLIAM TOWNSEND, DUBLIN, CIRCA 1748/9,
Baluster form with artichoke finial, sides chased with rococo scrolls, flowers, birds & fruit, one side with panel of sea-shells & coral, the other featuring a pair of birds amidst trees, vacant cartouche to one side, the other engraved with crest of an armoured arm embowed, the elbow resting on a chapeau, holding in the hand a sceptre, all below a baron's coronet, the upper handle socket chased with a bouquet of flowers, the lower socket terminating in a mask, the spout embellished with a shell below a vacant cartouche flanked by cornucopia & terminating in a dolphin's head, base inscribed with scratch-weight "35.8", Hibernia & crowned harp to rim of cover & upper body, maker's mark under base, 10¼ in. high (26 cm.), 35.75 oz.
