Lot Essay

According to the engraving the present sketch and its pendant, Cavaliers at rest (lost), were designed for King Louis XV and intended to be realised en grand. It seems that the final paintings were never actually delivered. Marie-Catherine Sahut has suggested they were intended for the Petite Galerie du roi at Versailles, whilst Xavier Salmon has suggested that the compositions were destined to the petits appartements at Fontainebleau.
