Lot Essay

Dr. Beck included the present picture in his 1973 catalogue raisonné (presumably on the basis of photographs), incorrectly recording the date as 1652 and giving only its approximate measurements. He judged the picture afresh, prior to its sale in 2000, and deemed it a 'fine late painting' and 'an important discovery'. It will be published as such in his forthcoming second supplement to his catalogue of the artist's paintings.
