Lot Essay

The use of the hortensia as a finial in the present lot is highly symbolic. The hortensia, a flower originating from North America and Japan, bears its name from Hortense de Beauharnais.
Hortense de Beauharnais, daughter of Alexandre de Beauharnais and Josephine Tascher de la Pagerie.
Hortense de Beauharnais married Napoleon's brother, Louis Bonaparte, King of Holland (1778-1846), brother of Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. Queen Hortense and King Louis Bonaparte had three children, including Charles Louis Napoleon, who later became Napoleon III.
