Lot Essay

Another cast of this bronze was formerly in the collection of the German author and philosopher Goethe, who is said to have enjoyed studying it while eating and drinking. It is a variation of an antique prototype, at least one example of which is in the State Art Collections in Kassel. See V. Krahn, 'Johann Wolfgang von Goethe as a Collector of Bronzes', in Small Bronzes of the Renaissance, New Haven and London, 2001, D. pincus ed., pp. 223-245, fig. 6.
