Lot Essay

Bartolomeo Bellano (circa 1437-1498), who is thought to have worked with Donatello toward the end of the latter's life, is one of the most important bronze sculptors of the quattrocento. The present figure is based on his gilt-bronze statuette in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (illustrated and discussed in Berlin, loc. cit.) which was widely reproduced in its own day. The composition here shows Bellano's indebtedness to his master, whose bronze of the same subject is now housed in the Bargello, Florence.
