Lot Essay

Only few pieces of Russian furniture of this period are signed, but a loose attribution to Heinrich Gambs (1765-1831) can be made, based on the recurrence of the exquisite verre églomisé plaque and brass-inlay decoration. Gambs began his career in his native Germany under David Roentgen and moved to Russia in the late 1780s where, by 1793, he became a leading figure amongst the cabinet-makers of St. Petersburg.
A closely related cheval mirror, bearing the inventory brand of the Winter Palace at St. Petersburg, was sold, Christie's, New York, 21 May 2003, lot 321.
