Riesling, Vendange Tardive--Vintage 1953
Alsace, Hugel
Level: 3cm; slightly depressed cork, loose label
"Three notes, the first in 1980, lacking the acidity to counterbalance the sugar. A much better bottle at Ziegler's in 1995: pure gold; very distinctive, fragrant; dry, assertive with very fragrant vanilla aftertaste. Most recently, in magnum: paler than expected; slightly spicy, then 'smokey'; very dry, slightly peach flavoured, almost steely, with rapier-like acidity. Remarkable vivacity for its age. Last noted at Hugel's Vendange Tardive Tasting, the Cinnamon Club, London, April 2002 **** MB, VIntage Wine
