The Ecclesiastical workshops of Tiffany Studios produced countless mosaics for churches and other public buildings, but mosaics for the domestic realm are relatively rare. This extraordinary mosaic panel depicts two groups of birds sitting in a lemon tree, with a lush background of flowers.
This panel is similar in subject, glass, size and construction to the famous 'Cockatoos' panel given by Joseph Briggs to the Haworth Art Gallery in Accrington, England. The lower half of the background is made up of unusual floral pieces of glass, which are used more sparingly in the Haworth panel.
This panel descended in the family of William Lefferts Brown, Jr. (1874-1930), of Rutherford, New Jersey, who owned a mercantile business on Warren Street in New York City.
