Lot Essay
Susan Goodrich Frackelton (1848-1932) was a major figure in the early china painting movement at the end of the nineteenth century. The daughter of a brickmaker, she established the Frackelton China and Decorating Works in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1883. Frackelton displayed salt-glazed stoneware at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, and in the 1900 Paris Exposition, she exhibited numerous Delft-style pieces with blue underglaze.
Made for Ansel and Mary Temple of Muskegon, Michigan, in 1901, this bowl is an excellent example of Frackelton's work at this time. Mary Temple was from Wisconsin, and by family tradition, she and Frackelton were childhood friends. The familiar tone of the letter from Frackelton that accompanies the bowl suggests a strong relationship:

My dear Friends,
I send you a thanksgiving bowl with Poppies.
If you do not like this wax finish as well as the high glaze and duller blue, it shall be sent to the Pottery and refired.
A council of war has been held. Dora, Emma Damon and Emma Hooker, Sarah Cornelia Alice and Anna. They voted this finish and color. It is the result of what is called a smothered kiln and is rather the vogue of present. I hope that you and your friends may have many a "cup of kindness"--and many a good salad from it with all the good times that come with them.
Wesa's cup will have to wait till a little later.
With much love--
Yours
