Lot Essay

Aymé Videau apprenticed under the famous London silversmith David Willaume from 1723-1733/4 when he gained his freedom. His work is described as '... of high quality and, from the mid-thirties, with particularly graceful flat chasing.' (A. Grimwade, London Goldsmiths, London, 1982).

He is perhaps best know for a toilet service of 1755 which is engraved with the arms of John Fleming of Brompton Park, Middlesex and his wife Jane, daughter of William Coleman and flat chased with scrolling foliage and flowers (Christie's New York, 19 October 2004, lot 1044 and Christie's London, 10 November 2005, lot 601).
