Lot Essay

The carved initials H and P refer to Captain Isaac Hull and Captain Oliver Hazard Perry, two captains whose victories over the British helped secure an American victory in the War of 1812. Hull, whose ship the U.S.S. Constitution defeated the British frigate Guerrigere in 1812, earned his ship the nickname "Old Ironsides." A year later, Perry won a critical battle on Lake Erie.
