Lot Essay

Numerous "Cumberland Action" drop-leaf dining tables have survived, and most of them have histories in the Boston area, though it was a popular form in New York as well. For similar examples of this form, see Israel Sack, American Antiques from Israel Sack Collection (New York), vol. III, p. 809, pl. 3510, Robert Mussey, The Furniture Masterworks of John and Thomas Seymour (Salem, 2003), cat. nos. 96 and 97, as well as two examples sold in these rooms, January 15-16, 2004, lots 569 and 580.
