Lot Essay

Though tables with similar Egyptian-revival style bases have been attributed to several nineteenth century furniture-makers, the eclectic combination of motifs and materials used on this table top is typical of furniture made by the New York firm of Pottier and Stymus. The table top combines wreath ormolu, scenes from the Iliad in copper relief, Homer's profile in bronze at the center, and a porcelain plate featuring three children's scenes in the romantic style. A similar rosewood center table, circa 1870, signed P&S, and now in a private New York collection, combines an Egyptian-style base with a table surface framed by an almost identical embossing, in copper, of Romanesque motifs.
