Lot Essay

Probably made for Lionel, the 5th Viscount, who was married in New York in 1779 to the daughter of Frederick Philipse of Philipseburg Manor. Their son Percy, the 6th Viscount was ambassador to Portugal in 1806; his portrait is illustrated, with a plate from the service, by E.F. Brancante in O Brasil e a Louca da India, p. 277.
