D.S. Howard (New York and the China Trade, 1984 ex. cat., p. 113) calls Clinton "...a giant in the political life of New York..." Hailing from an important Anglo-American family with a distinguished record in the Revolution and early New York state politics, Clinton was a New York Assemblyman and then U.S. Senator before becoming Mayor and later a Presidential candidate defeated by James Madison.
Several writers have noted the relatively conservative style of the landscapes in the Clinton service. Howard suggests that they may have been based on the pattern of a Van Renssalaer service that would have been well-known to the Clintons as guests at Cherry Hill.
A larger covered dish is illustrated by E. Gordon, Collecting Chinese Export, p. 129, and another bu the Schiffers, op. cit., p. 94, then in the collection of Mrs. Joseph Alsop and on loan to the White House.
