Lot Essay

Similar pairs of famille verte table screens, but on wooden, not porcelain, stands, were sold Christie's, London, 9 May 1994, lot 2, and 15 May 1995, lot 67. These small screens, often in precious materials such as jade, ivory or zitan, if not of porcelain, were made for the scholar's study, to accompany the paper, ink, brush and inkstone that were known as the four treasures of the scholar's table.
