The elegant ladies standing in mirror image with unusual candleholders in the form of sacred lingzhi fungus in their arms, wearing iron-red and gilt collars over floral robes belted in green, their underskirts iron-red with gilt roundels and black and gilt hems, the faces sweetly smiling, the hair carefully arranged in high topknots with puce floral ornaments, partially in the biscuit with the lower strands glazed black

Lot Essay

Forming impressive decoration for the 18th century European dinner table or mantel, these pairs of lady candleholders were perhaps originally inspired by the 17th century Kakiemon Bijin standing ladies, who were often portrayed holding sake bottles.
